St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art,Glasgow

pp 291-292 in The Spiritual Traveler, England, Scotland, Wales (The Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes in Britain), Martin Palmer and Nigel Palmer, Hidden Spring, 2000

This Museum houses the famous painting Christ of St. John of the Cross by Salvador Dali, which was balanced for me by Dali’s painting in the Fredericton Art Gallery, New Brunswick, Canada.

The dance of destruction of the universe is rendered in a very large bronze Indian statue of Shiva, whose presence understandably dominates the space.

Sutton Hoo:

Located near Woodbridge, Sussex, the Sutton Hoo burials of ships and warriors have become well known from the image of the famous burial mask alone.  Further, the exhibition of displays and artifacts establishes that Anglo Saxons were not “barbarians” but fine craftsmen and a cultured people that probably influenced Celtic art.

Julian of Norwhich

Writer and mystic (1342-c.1429): St. Julian’s Church with St. Julian’s Cell, which is open for prayer and meditation is located about 15 minutes from the much larger Norwich Cathedral. St. Julian’s legacy is her  book, The Revelations of Divine Love.  She was one of the first women to write in English and her perception that there is no wrath in God, but that we project wrath onto God, was indeed a revelation ahead of her time.
